Israeli author Henya Shanun-Klein, PhD s a professor of Psychology and a Thanatologist (Death, Dying, Bereavement) in the US. She is the founder of the Thanatology Program in Israel and serves as a lecturer, researcher, therapist, and author of GILI’S BOOK, STUDIES IN GRIEF AND BEREAVEMENT, HAVE YOU SEEN A DARK-HAIRED MAN WITH BURNING EYES, and now MARS – FRONTIER, translated from the Hebrew by Tal Karen.
Composing a science fiction novel that closely addresses contemporary reality make the author’s writing immediately credible, As she opens her novel, she states, ‘Toward the tend of the 21st century, the Earth seemed to have lost all form – battered, beaten, crying for deliverance.’ Reality core established, this mission to Mars is launched: ‘On May 20th, 2069, the Phoenix embarked on its journey to Mars. The international team manning the pioneering expedition was comprised of seven astronauts, six humans, and one cyborg [a portmanteau of cybernetic and organism, a being with both organic and biomechatronic body parts]. The ship’s commander was Joy LIore. The investigation will take her from the safety of the Houston Space Center to the desolate surface of Mars, where she will discover more about the human spirit than she ever thought possible. The Red Planet changes people. And as with those who came before her, Dr. Tzuk must walk the balance between the hopes and dreams of mankind – and her own.’
Fascinating as a ‘futuristic, realistic investigation story’, the novel underlines the significance of the human spirit that assists the cast of characters to both cope with and understand the impact of transition to another planet. I love reading SciFi. And this book is so much more than just some crew stuck on Mars and never coming back. And believe me, I watched a lot of movies like that. What I admire most about this set is the way how characters are carefully developed. I see in the authors` biography that is not a cincidence. The part where team members visit a psychologist and are trying to solve their problems is extremely realistic, and my favorite part too.
So, another adventure to conquer space, and still stay approximately near home - coming to Mars. And more psychologically oriented than the rest of them. I love it.

For me, sci-fi novels are hit or miss. There’s really no in-between – it either gets me hooked, keeps me engaged, has a mind-blowing story, relatable characters, incredible plot-twists, and, perhaps equally important, catchy science bits. The body of sci-fi literature is so immense, I believe it’s really not worth wasting your time with average novels, because there’s always going to be a banger novel right down the corner, waiting to be found. With Mars – Frontier, I can safely say I found this banger novel. It has everything I need, and probably even more, it’s just so good. Right off the bat, the story is solid, mysterious, and awakens the little space explorer inside you. It then only goes uphill from there, and keeps getting better. Easily 5/5
