On May 27, 2006, the island of Java in Indonesia was struck by a magnitude 6.2 Richter scale earthquake. More then 5,000 people were killed and over 50,000 were injured. Thousands of hundreds were left without food and shelter.
In June of 2006, IFA dispatched to Solo on the island of Java, a team of volunteers, among them psychologists, a physician and other post-trauma experts. There were around 9000 survivors in the region of Solo most living in tents were their houses used to be prior to the earthquake.
During its one week stay, IFA`s team managed to dig up a well to supply fresh water, to set up a mass kitchen that employed local cooks and provided 5200 well balanced meals a day.
At the same time, two psychologists - post-trauma and bereavement specialists, treated 220 children between the ages of 3 to 15 years-old, and adults of 30 to over 70 years-old, all trauma victims. This psychological intervention, laid the foundation for future post-trauma assistance. Eighty percent of the survivors were Moslem and 20% Catholic Christian. Neither was aware of IFA volunteers` true nationality.
